“The event is symbolically linked to the church of S. Antonio Abate (14th century). On January 17, the Masks representing a herd in transhumance, gather at the church, attend mass, receive the blessing, make the 3 propitiatory laps around the church and acclaim the Saint with the deafening sound of the bells. Subsequently the procession of masks moves on to the historic center of Tricarico, along the ancient Via Appia” From the Basilicata Region website.

“L’evento è legato simbolicamente alla chiesa di S. Antonio abate (sec. XIV). Il 17 gennaio, le Maschere che rappresentano una mandria in transumanza, si radunano presso la chiesa , assistono alla messa, ricevono la benedizione fanno i 3 giri propiziatori intorno alla chiesa e acclamano il santo con l’assordante suono delle campane. Successivamente il corteo delle maschere si muove dal santuario raggiungendo il centro storico di Tricarico, attraversando l’antica via Appia.” Dal sito della Regione Basilicata.
